Going Green: Simple Steps for Sustainable City Living

May 11, 2023

Los Angeles’ weather has been a bit unpredictable lately. With more rain than we’re used to, it’s becoming pretty clear that our actions have a direct impact on the environment.

That’s why we want to show you how easy it is to make a difference by going green. So go grab that matcha latte you’ve been craving (or whatever floats your boat) and let’s get to it!

6 Tips for Making Your Apartment Life Eco-Friendly in LA

1.) Conserve For Green Energy

Lights

  • Turn off lights when you leave a room
  • Update your light bulbs to energy-efficient LED bulbs
  • Use as much natural light as possible

Electronics

  • Turn off electronics when not in use or keep them unplugged
  • Use smart appliances that turn themselves off automatically
  • Unplug your cell phone charger once you’re done using it
  • Use power strips to reduce energy usage

Air Conditioner

  • Use the air conditioner only when necessary
  • Opt for natural airflow from the outside to help keep your apartment cool

2.) Conserve Water Use

Between California’s ongoing water restrictions and recent changes in weather patterns – We’re looking at you, rain.
It’s more important than ever to be mindful of our daily water usage.

  • Turn off the faucet when not in use
  • Keep water from running unattended, even for a few seconds
  • Use only the amount of water you need, and avoid overfilling pots or pans
  • Take shorter showers, or consider turning off the water while you sud up
  • Combine your laundry loads to decrease water usage

3.) Reduce Waste

Single-stream trash collection

Check to see if your building participates in a single-stream trash collection service, which is an effective way to beat waste reduction. This service is not only better for sustainable city living but it’s cost-effective.

Recycling & Reuse

  • Repurpose items like wine bottles into flower vases
  • Sort through old clothes to donate
  • Extend the life of your clothes by sewing them when they get damaged.

Composting

Your greatest kitchen asset is a compost bin in your apartment. It’s a great way to dispose of leftovers and food scraps like vegetables, and eggshells. But be sure to check with your landlord about where your green compost bin is.

4.) Be Mindful About Transportation

Getting around from point A to B (or even C) in the city can be challenging. But Los Angeles has many sustainable transportation options available:

Public transportation

Ride-hailing & Sharing

  • Uber or Lyft
  • Sharing rides with friends and family

Biking

Biking is a fun and healthy way to get around LA. Plus, it’s a great way to explore neighborhoods & hidden gems you might not otherwise see.

Walking

  • Walk for shorter distances for fresh air, exercise, and improve mental health

5.) Eat Greener (Sustainable Food Choices)

Eat locally sourced food

Get fresh and delicious produce while supporting your community and local economy.

Luckily, California has a selection of farmer markets to choose from, including the oldest one in America located right in Hollywood!

Cut down on meat consumption

While it may be tempting to indulge in an In-N-Out Burger, try vegetarian or vegan options. Not only are these options better for the environment, but they can also be mouth-watering, delicious, and satisfying.

If you’re a meat lover and can’t give it up, we got you!

Choose fish

Not only is it a more green option, but it’s equally delicious. You can indulge in delectable dishes such as mahi-mahi fish tacos or honey-glazed grilled salmon.

And, let’s not forget about satisfying your sushi cravings at popular places like Sugar Fish.

6.) Go For Environmentally Friendly Products

Choosing environmentally friendly products can have a significant impact on the planet.

Ditch single-use items

Opt for reusable items like straws, kitchen towels, and makeup pads. This will not only help to reduce waste but also save you money in the long run.

Bring your own bags

When you go shopping, bring your own tote bags instead of paying 10 cents for reusable grocery bags or recycled paper bags. This is a simple and effective way to reduce your carbon footprint and save money.

Shop second-hand

Shopping at thrift stores is a great way to reduce waste and save money. You can even shop online at places like ThredUp for more convenience.
